Drinks Recipes Sparkle All Year

Sparkle All year

Hello 2013!

One of my favourite things about New Years is that it provides the opportunity to make changes and refresh yourself. I know, realistically, you can do this at any point in the year, but there is just something about a new year that seems to make this practice a little easier in January. Maybe it’s the fact that I had a full week off of work for the first time in 6 months, or I’ve been wearing some of the new clothes I got for Christmas (nothing feels better than a new outfit), but I just feel refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to be my very best self in 2013! Ready to sparkle, if you will.

Which brings me to my 2nd favourite thing about New Years– Champagne! Sadly, I did not have any this new year’s eve, but I do love indulging in a glass or two of champagne, or any other sparkling wine for that matter. Just in case anyone was wondering, or didn’t know, only sparkling wines made in the Champagne region of France can truly be called Champagne. Sparkling wines made in other regions have different names, such as Cava from Spain, or Asti from Italy.

But, why limit yourself to feeling good, “sparkly” and ready to take on the world during the first few weeks of January? Why not drink something “sparkly” throughout the year? So I thought, what better way to remind myself that I can restart, be my best me and feel “sparkly” any time throughout the year than doing a monthly Champagne Cocktail post throughout 2013… ok, maybe it’s a bit of a lame stretch and this is just an excuse to try out the 12 different sparkling wine cocktails from the January edition of the Everyday Rachael Ray magazine subscription I received for Christmas from my mom. Side note: it was an electronic subscription from Zinio, for my iPad, it’s a really cool (and cheaper) way to read magazines.

Most of the cocktails look pretty darn delicious, although there is one made with espresso and stout for October that I’m not feeling too great about, we’ll see about that one when we get to it.

First up for January…

Clockwork Orange

– sugar cubes or white sugar
– 1 oz. fresh tangerine juice (or orange juice)
– 1/2 oz. lime juice
– Champagne or other sparkling wine

1. Drop a sugar cube in the bottom of each champagne flute, or use just under 1 tsp for each glass.
2. Add 1 oz. of fresh tangerine or orange juice. I just used some concentrated orange juice that I had on hand.
3. Add 1/2 oz. of lime juice.
4. Top with sparkling wine.
5. Enjoy!

Resealable bottle

The bottle of sparkling wine I bought was kind of neat in that it had a resealable cap, which was a great idea in theory, but in reality we drank the whole bottle, so we really didn’t need it. Still kind of a cool idea though and I would be curious to see how well the resealable lid works and if it would keep the sparkling wine sparkly.

I’m really looking forward to trying out all these cocktails throughout 2013, yum!

Happy Sunday!
