I have been quite interested in trying out Chipotle Mexican Grill, especially after reading this article in Time Magazine that discussed Chipotle’s unique approach to creating fresh, ethical and delicious fast food. Last summer, my mom did a guest post reviewing Chipotle when she was down in Arizona and said that she thought Chipotle was “good, but not fabulous.” Contrary to that, Nick and Lauren seemed to have nothing but great things to say about Chipotle. So, I knew that I had to make Chipotle a destination next time I was down in the states.

We arrived in Arizona at about 7:30 pm and as we were driving to Lauren’s place, wouldn’t you know it, we realized we were all a little hungry right as we were driving past a Chipotle. How convenient! I ended up going to Chipotle 3 times over the course of my vacation, so I’ll combine all of my visits into this one post. Clearly, I really liked Chipotle. Fresh, delicious food and the price was right!

Chipotle at NightSimilar to Subway, after deciding what type of dish you want (taco, burrito, burrito bowl or salad) and what type of meat you want (braised pork, barbacoa beef, grilled beef or grilled chicken) Chipotle let’s you load up your meal with whatever you want.

Food at Chipotle

Every time I visited Chipotle I ended up ordering 1 or 2 chicken tacos and usually we would all also share some chips and guacamole. I usually filled up my soft, flour tortilla with grilled chicken, pico de gallo, a little bit of the spicy salsa, and some shredded jack cheese. The chicken was very flavourful, a little spicy and very moist. The picco de gallo added a nice freshness to the taco, the hot salsa added a nice kick of heat, while the cheese added nice flavour and helped to counteract that heat. The great thing about the tacos too, was that you can order as many or as few as you wanted, depending on how hungry you are.

Barbacoa Beef TacosNick often ordered the burrito bowl because he found that it was a good portion size that he could customize and it seems relatively healthy. For the burrito bowls you choose your meat and toppings, similar to the tacos, but can also add in rice or beans.

Chips, Guacamole and Salsa VerdeThe chips and guacamole are the perfect size to share between 2 or 3 people, depending on how hungry you are. The chips were thin, crispy, salty and served a little warm; perfect to scoop up guacamole and salsa. I was a little a skeptical about the guacamole, as I thought it looked like maybe it was a little too mushy for my taste, but after giving it a try, I was won over. The guacamole was great, with just the right blend of onions, cilantro and lime.

Robyn at ChipotleI was really impressed with Chipotle as an excellent option for fresh, delicious and decently priced fast food. I’m really hoping that Chipotle will open up a location in Edmonton, although I am not holding my breath on that one. But you never know, I really think Chipotle would thrive here.

In the meantime, I’ll scour the internet for some copycat recipes and see if I can replicate that Chipotle deliciousness at home.

Happy Sunday!

  1. There are Chipotle in Toronto and Vancouver so the possibility of one opening in Edmonton is always there!

For some reason, Chipotle didn’t necessarily excite me. Food was OK; however, it didn’t stop me from going to, say, Qdoba. Now that I bring that up, assuming you have been to these places, how does it compare to Qdoba, In-N-Out, Mucho Burrito and/or Tres Carnales?

  2. I went to Much Burrito a few years ago and wasn’t that impressed, but it sounds like I need to go again and try out the tacos so I can compare to Chipotle.

I haven’t had the chance to go to In-N-Out and I have actually never heard of Qdoba, but I will have to search them out next time I am down in the States. As for Tres Carnales, I thought it was good there, but I have only been once and I think I need to try it again before making a judgement.

Thanks for the comments Adam and Kim!

  3. Love chipotle…. Bring it to edmonton … I email them once a week. Mucho burrito is terrible and their service is poor. No comparison! Chipotle rocks,

    1. Good point! Also, although I do like Tres Caranles, if I am looking for a quick “fast food” lunch alternative, close to work it just wouldn’t work. However, if there was a Chipotle down the street, instead on McDonalds, that would make me happy. 🙂
