Hank’s Haute Dogs

This year, I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday while on vacation in Hawaii. I must say, it feels pretty great to wake up on your birthday to breakfast on the lanai. All you need is a piece of toast smothered in Guava Jelly, some POG juice and a cup of Kona coffee to enjoy while it turns to dawn on the Pacific… now that’s the way to start a birthday!

King Kamehameha I StatueWe spent the morning on a walking tour of Honolulu, put on by the Architects Institute of America. The tour was actually quite interesting and a really good way to get a feel for the city and it’s rich history.

Hank Haute DogsAfter the tour we made the quick drive to Hank’s Haute Dogs which offers a creative take on the All-American favourite, the hot dog. Hank’s is a cute little place just off of Ala Moana Blvd, but away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. There are a couple of stools along the counter inside, but most of the seating is outside on picnic tables with umbrellas. And when you are in Hawaii, why wouldn’t you want to sit outside?

Hank'sI ordered the Chorizo Haute Dog, which was grilled chorizo sausage, with brown mustard, grilled onions and cilantro. The chorizo sausage had a nice kick to it and the generous amount of toppings all complimented the sausage really well.

Chorizo DogMy mom decided on the Fat Boy, a  hot dog wrapped in bacon, then deep-fried and served with lettuce, tomato and mayo. She said the flavours all worked really well together (and well they should, it’s a play on the BLT) and that the dog had a nice crunch to it. Yum!

Fat BoyMy dad decided on the Brastwurst, which was a classically steam brat, served with Dusseldorf mustard and sauerkraut. He really seemed to enjoy it.

DSC03352We also shared an order of the Beef Fat Fries. Yum! Anything cooked in animal fat almost always really tasty!

Beef Fat FriesTo quench my thirst I enjoyed the Lilikoi-Lime Soda, which was quite good, but maybe could have been a little more “lilikoiy” and less “limey” for my taste. My mom enjoyed her Hibiscus Lemonade and my dad had, of course, an ice-cold Coke.

Hibiscus Lemonade & Lilikoi SodaWe really enjoyed Hank’s. It was a low-key, relatively quick place to grab lunch, but it was fun to try somewhere local and a lot more interesting than typical fast food. Everything was really tasty and it so pleasant to sit at the picnic table, under the umbrella, just people watching. If you are ever in Honolulu and you enjoy a got hot dog, then I recommend try out a Haute Dog from Hank’s.

Hank'sAfter lunch we headed out of the city to the Ko Olina area, home to many of the beautiful resorts on Oahu. One of my good, long-time friends, Katy, was also on Oahu vacationing with her family, so we met up with them to explore the area and to go for dinner.

KapoleiI really enjoyed exploring Ko Olina. There were so many beautiful resorts to visit and lots of gorgeous beaches and lagoons to explore. It is definitely an area I would love to return to; it seems like such a great vacation spot.

Banyan TreeWe headed into Kapolei to visit Le Nonne to enjoy some delicious Italian food for my birthday dinner. Although the food was delicious, I didn’t end up taking too many pictures because I was just enjoying myself too much. I did manage to snap a picture of the delicious Lobster Linguine I had for dinner, which was so rich and full of large chunks of succulent lobster meat. I also managed to capture my complimentary dessert, complete with a birthday candle. 🙂

Lobster Linguine

I had the most wonderful birthday. It was so great to be away somewhere warm and tropical to celebrate with my parents, but what made it even more special was getting to spend time with my dear friend Katy and her awesome family. I have found in the past that it can sometimes be hard to be away from home on your birthday, but I think when you are surrounded by such warmth (and I mean both kinds of warmth) you can’t help but have an amazing day. The only thing that would have made the day even more perfect would have been if Nick and Lauren were there to celebrate too, but that just meant we got to celebrate again later in Maui. I can easily say it was one of the best birthdays I have ever had! Everyone should be so lucky to feel so loved.

Happy Wednesday!
