I am on my way to being caught up on the champagne cocktails. It’s August now (where did the summer go?) and I’m halfway through all the cocktails! I think all of them have been pretty good, however there have definitely been some stand-outs. I think my favourite so far is the Sweet Tart.
This cocktail, Melon Patch, was pretty interesting because of the rosemary in the recipe. Rosemary is something that I usually associate with savoury dishes, not beverages or baking, however rosemary seems to be showing up in some unusual places lately…. like this drink.
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 1/2 cup water
– 1 sprig rosemary
– 2 oz. gin
– 1 oz. fresh lemon juice
– sparkling wine
Simmer sugar, water and rosemary sprig together until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Let cool.
Using a mortar and pestle crush 4 one inch cubes of watermelon. Or you can use your hand.
In a cocktail shaker or jar filled with ice, add crushed watermelon, gin, lemon juice, and 1 1/2 oz. rosemary syrup. Shake well and strain.
Add the mixture into 2 champagne flutes, top with sparkling wine and garnish with a watermelon wedge.
This drink was quite good. The watermelon made the drink taste really fresh and you could just taste a hint of the rosemary, which was really interesting.
It’s been a lot of fun to make all of these cocktails. There are a lot of different flavour combinations that I wouldn’t normally think of putting together and it’s been great to try them out. I am looking forward to seeing what the next 6 will taste like!
